The Broyhill Wind Turbine is located at the highest point on the Appalachian State University campus. Installed in June 2009, it stands as a symbol of the university’s dedication to renewable energy. The project was funded through the Appalachian State University Renewable Energy Initiative, with support from New River Light & Power Company.
This turbine plays an important role in the university’s energy strategy. It generates clean, renewable energy that helps power the campus. The turbine also contributes to reducing the university’s carbon footprint. As the first wind turbine on campus, it serves as both a functional energy source and a teaching tool for students and visitors.
Sustainability in Appalachia
The Broyhill Wind Turbine is more than just a power generator; it showcases the potential of wind energy in the Appalachian region. By demonstrating how wind energy works, the turbine helps raise awareness about sustainable power solutions. It encourages students, faculty, and local residents to think about wind energy’s possibilities in their own communities.
In addition to its practical benefits, the turbine supports research and education in renewable energy. It provides a real-world example for students studying environmental science and engineering. This hands-on experience helps students understand the importance of sustainable energy and inspires future innovations in the field Appalachian State University continues to lead by example in promoting sustainability. The Broyhill Wind Turbine is a reminder of the university’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future. It stands as a symbol of the importance of renewable energy in shaping our world.
